Black Redstart

Life bird No 779.
This had been a bit of a bogey bird, I hadn't been up and down the country looking for it over the last few years but I have been to enough good locations to perhaps have stumbled across one, but never did. So this was a concerted trip to nail one.

I received a message that a female had been seen in Neston. So to get one in my home county was worth the 60 minute drive.

Another bitterly cold day with frozen snow making it a little precarious under foot, but at least the location looked good under the white blanket.

It was a busy morning with dog walkers so she flew to the sanctuary of a nearby tree

You have here excellent photos
, I will come back after busy Easter time:)
You are going to visit Oulu and more northern places I suppose. It made me smile, because Oulu is my birthtown and half of citizens of Oulu are my cousins, joking :)
I made my MSc of the biology in the University of Oulu.
Near Oulu is many good places for watching migrants. Are going with some group ?
And when you will leave Oulu to the North you will drive through my mother`s homeplace. Her home farm`s fields and the sea shore is now a suburb of Oulu by name Taskila :)
I hope your visit will be rewarding.

Your 60 minute drive was worth it then and you got some nice photos of the Black Redstart!!!
That Wheatear is a sharp looking one!!

A long drive but worth it!
Wonderful shots! I love the shot of the Wheater with the contrasting textures of the stone and lichens - the colors too.
LOVE your header shot!!!

It looks like that little beauty was just sitting there waiting for you to get there after your long drive! I think she was waiting for the perfect photographer to arrive. And she got him! Nice. I hope the roads were less icy than the fields. It was a good birding day for you.

A Great post Dave, with lovely images. I got a bit blasé about Black Redstart as I used to see them a lot in railway yards in Central Europe. I'd love to see one now!
