A few hours at Pikelow farm to try and see some Buzzards failed miserably but I did get to see two or three Great Spotted Woodpecker individuals. Certainly an adult mail and a juvenile male. The light early on wasn't the best although it did improve before I left.

I was going to pick a favourite but really they are all great shots. If I had to, it would be no 3.
You know Dave it is simply ages since I photographed a Great- spotted Woodpecker. They aren't too easy to get unless I put peanuts in the garden and then not guaranteed. Your pictures make me want to try again - very good with great lighting.
brilliant looking birds! shoot, even the limb it is perched on had to get 'gussied up' a bit with lichen and moss to compete a bit in color!

Fabulous pictures. I'm from the US and not familiar with this bird. Do you have any idea of how it might be related to our red-bellied, golden fronted, downy or hairy woodpeckers?
Great shots - I was glad to catch up with couple of these when I was back in the Uk, but no pictures unfortunately.

They are great...and, the branches they are on ...wonderful.....
I enjoyed the beautiful shots of the woodpecker, the reds are so vivid, and the patterning really looks painted on.
