Roaches - Staffordshire

A lovely family walk with Liz, Kim, Steve and Mikey. Started at Hen Cloud crossed the Roaches and crossed to Ramshaw Rocks. A 4 hour circular walk finished with some bug catching and then a pint at the Rock Inn Public House.

Canary Shouldered Thorn

Ennomos alniaria:

First one ever in the garden and my fifth Thorn species of the summer, so very happy.

Wingspan 38-42 mm.

Aptly named after the canary-yellow thorax, or 'shoulders', this is a fairly common species all over Britain.

It has a single generation which flies from July to October, and is regularly attracted to artificial light.

It frequents woodland, gardens and a range of other habitats, and the larvae feed on a variety of deciduous trees.

 



Mothing is slowing down but am still able to get some garden lifers.

numbers are decreasing in the trap now but as each season changes so do the species that take to the wing, also some species are on a second brood and those that haven't been seen for three months or so are now re-appearing.
